The ISKCON Malaysia free food distribution society is called the Food For Life Malaysia Society. Around the country at all our 30 ISKCON centres free prasadam is distributed to all a minimum of once a week.
Apart from free meals distribution at the ISKCON centres, volunteers also drive out in food distribution pick-up vehicles and periodically distribute full meal plates freely at various locations around the ISKCON centres.
One very interesting and rewarding programme is called the Anna Dana & Sastra Dana programme. This programme encourages those who can afford some financial givings to support by sponsoring the cost of full meals & books to school students. Sponsors can pay for both books and meals or either one. This programme is especially targetted at school students are given free meals and free books.
Both Anna Dana and Sastra Dana are very important as practices of giving. One is to give knowledge while the other to give food.
This is a perfect way for a grhasta householders to engage their hard earned money in spiritual benevolent services of giving free prasdam and spiritual knowledge. After all it is mentioned that householders are suposed to daily cook meals and call upon the public three times for anyone join for meals before themslves respecing their meals.
Anyone can also donate their time in helping to prepare the meals. We are always short of hands since the total numbers of meals to prepare is not always the same. We can assure that anyone who joins us in this service either in providing finance, helping cook, giving in kind or in any other way will surely be blessed and will themselves feel blissful.
In the Chandogya Upanishad (7.26.2) it is said:
ahara-suddhau sattva-suddhih sattva-suddhau dhruvanusmritih smriti-labhye sarvagranthinam
vipramokshas tasmai mridita-kasayaya tamasah param darsayati bhagavan sanat-kumarah.
“By performance of yajna one’s eatables become sanctified, and by eating sanctified foodstuffs one’s very existence becomes purified. By the purification of existence finer tissues in the memory become sanctified, and when memory is sanctified one can think of the path of liberation. In this way Lord Sanatkumara revealed the spiritual truth, which is on the farther shore of the world of darkness.”
